About 60 members of the Frisco Texas Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have registered to help index data from valuable records, e.g., census records, birth and death certificates. Key information from these documents is recorded online and used to develop indexes to aid those doing genealogical research.

Heidi Romney, a member of the stake, is the index coordinator and stated that since 2005 over 350 million records have been indexed worldwide.

"Locally we are just a small part of a global effort," Romney said. "The LDS Church has over 200 camera teams in 45 countries recording some 60 million images a year.

"Indexing allows an army of volunteers from around the world to help preserve and make records of our ancestors available online for research. Using an online system, volunteers can easily extract data from valuable records and provide free searchable indexes for all to use from the convenience of their homes."

When asked how this effort helps others, Romney said a friend's family history research had been stalled for years. But as a result of using online indexed data bases, she has now been able to research literally hundreds of her ancestors.

In 2009, the Frisco Texas Stake helped index some 138,000 names. Anyone interested in helping with this effort can go to http://indexing.familysearch.org and register as an indexer.

From a home computer, it's easy to record the information written on the downloaded document. There is no minimum number of names to index. By working an hour a week, an indexer can record about 2600 names in a year.

"It's easy," Romney said.. "It's fun, and I know I'm helping others do their family history from my home computer."

"Haz tu Arbol Genealogico...El Arbol mas Hermoso de la Creacion"

Por medio de la historia familiar descubrimos el árbol más hermoso de la creación: nuestro árbol genealógico. Sus numerosas raíces se remontan a la historia y sus ramas se extienden a través de la eternidad. La historia familiar es la expresión extensiva del amor eterno; nace de la abnegación y provee la oportunidad de asegurarse para siempre una unidad familiar".
